We all now how complex
teenagers can be sometimes. If they put something in mind, then we have a
problem. One of the ideas that come nowadays in the minds of teenagers refers
to cosmetic surgeries. It is hard enough to be a good parent, but if your child
tells you that he wants cosmetic surgery, how can you react. Could it be a good
thing or a bad thing?
Cosmetic surgery is a technique applied for a
wide variety of problems. We can’t say for sure that these techniques are
completely incompatible with teenager. If your child wants to do this, then
there are some things that you must now before deciding what to do. Also there
are some factors that must be discussed and this way you will know if what you
are doing is right or wrong.
The most important thing that has to be taken
into consideration when dealing with a teenager who wants a cosmetic surgery is
his health. For instance, if the child is obese, that surgery could help him,
if we talk about a gastric by-pass.
For this situation first you need to talk to
your child about the other options there are for loosing weight, options that
don’t imply surgery. He could do physical exercise or change his diet and if
this doesn’t work, then surgery could be a solution.
Another thing that has to be completely understood
is why your child wants to change the way he looks. And this is because most
cosmetic surgeries are made because that person isn’t pleased with the way he
looks. By understanding the reason then you might make him change his mind,
that is if it is not a very good reason.
For instance, he can have low self-esteem
because his colleagues at school make fun of him. In this case, the situation
can be solved in a different manner. Or there are situations when only cosmetic
surgery helps him to have a better opinion about himself.
If you have decided that you will let your
teenage child to undergo cosmetic surgery then you too must be well informed,
not only your child. You must gather information about what procedures are
permitted for those who don’t have eighteen years old and what doctors agree to
do surgery on teenagers. There are some procedures that aren’t permitted
because the child’s body is still growing and hasn’t finished developing.
Make sure your child understands what a cosmetic
surgery really is, what are its risks and the problems that can appear. He must
be able to face all the issues related to a cosmetic surgery. If he is
determined to do it just because he wants to look as a movie star, then you
might want to make him change his mind at least for now and wait for a couple
of years to see if he still wants the same thing.
Before a teenager has cosmetic surgery it is
very important to make him understand what the recovery period means. This
sometimes can last even a few weeks when he has to rest and let the body heal.
If these measures aren’t followed then many complications can appear regarding
the health.
You need to know that in United States there are
many restrictions regarding cosmetic surgeries performed to teenagers. And
there are medical arguments to support these restrictions. If you will approve
cosmetic surgery for your child make sure he is ready for this and that he has
a very good reason why he is doing it.
